Hair transplant
Most of us take hair for granted - that is, until it's gone. For many people, a hair transplant can help bring back what looks like a full head of hair - or at least fuller.
If thinning hair or baldness really bothers you, a hair transplant can be a way to feel more comfortable with your appearance.
Hair transplantation is a procedure used to treat hair loss. Various methods are available, but all hair transplants involve taking follicles from a donor scalp and placing these follicles in bald areas of the scalp.
There are several hair transplant methods, but the main ones are the FUE method, the DHI method and the Safir method.
The FUE method
FUE – or Follicular Unit Extraction is a hair transplant process that replaces lost or thinning hair by taking healthy follicles from a donor area of the scalp (usually the back and sides) and transplanting them to a thinning area of the head, such as the hairline, or crown. FUE is a minimally invasive hair restoration option that requires skill and precision and achieves the best and most natural result.
An FUE hair transplant works by extracting natural groups of 1-4 hairs, and transplanting them to the bald area of the scalp.
Our surgeons will first work to remove a number of grafts usually in groups of 1-4 hairs. These clusters of hair are usually extracted from the sides of the head or the back of the neck, using a specialized extracting instrument less than 1 mm in diameter. These follicles are then transferred to the recipient area of the scalp and implanted using a stereo microscope. Depending on the number of follicles being processed, hair transplantation with the FUE method takes 6 to 9 hours.
We take great care to plant the hair at the right angle to mimic the previous hair as it would grow naturally to ensure the newly transplanted hair blends perfectly and resembles a natural hairstyle.
One of the things you need is healthy hair growth on the back and sides of the head to serve as a donor area to receive follicles. Other factors, such as hair color, texture and wave or curl, can also affect the result.
The DHI method
DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) hair transplant surgery is a newer procedure compared to FUE and is similar to the FUE technique, meaning it leaves no scars after surgery and offers a natural look.
As a first step, the hair follicles are removed one by one using a specialized tool with a diameter of 1 mm or less. In the next step, the hair follicles are loaded into an implant device known as the Choi Implanter Pen and the procedure is performed by implanting them directly into the recipient area. During the DHI procedure, canal creation and implantation are completed at the same time. With the Choi Implanter pen, it gives the doctor more sensitivity when implanting hair follicles. At the same time, it provides more comfortable control of the angle, direction and depth of the newly transplanted hair. Also, the recovery time for DHI is similar to FUE. It usually takes 12-18 months for full results to appear.
The difference between FUE and DHI Method
In the FUE method, channels are manually opened in the head before the hair follicles (roots) are implanted. In the DHI method, a specialized pen-shaped tool is used that can do both at the same time, both opening and implantation (seeding). Many patients may prefer the FUE method over the DHI method. In the DHI method, the maximum number of transplants that can be implanted is 4,000, while the FUE method can cover a much larger area. For this reason, DHI is usually preferred to treat smaller and specific areas of hair loss.
The Sapphire Method
Sapphire hair transplant is the advanced minimally invasive version of the FUE hair transplant technique, which is applied with special surgical pens with sharp tips made of sapphire mineral.
The sapphire technique is performed by transplanting one by one the hair follicles taken from the donor area into open V-shaped incisions, the sapphire in the area to be transplanted.
With this technique, tissue trauma caused by these micro-wounds is minimized. The V-shaped channels opened by the sharp sapphire blades are much smaller. A minimal surgical incision significantly shortens the wound healing process, reduces tissue deformation and helps us achieve much more natural hair transplant results.
Regardless of which method is used, hair transplantation is done by applying local anesthesia.
