Ophthalmology is a medical unit that deals with eye diseases. Eye diseases can cause deterioration or complete loss of vision due to environmental, genetic or age-related factors. While some eye diseases do not show any symptoms in their early stages, most eye diseases can present with one or more problems such as severe burning and itching, reduced or narrowed vision, inability to distinguish colors and light discomfort.
Regular medical checkups are the measures that can be taken to prevent eye diseases. Many eye diseases can be treated when regular check-ups are done and the necessary treatment is started when the disease is in its early stages.
