Pediatric Cardiology

Pediatric cardiology is a unit that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of heart diseases in children starting from the baby's heart in the mother's womb and up to the age of 18. The development of the heart, which takes its particular shape with the differentiation and development of cells, is completed within two months after fertilization.

The heart, which before this time is tubular, becomes an organ with 4 valves and 4 chambers within 60 days and continues to work throughout the human life. In some cases, depending on the development of the baby's heart, which is still in the mother's womb, there are disorders, in other words, anomalies. This situation accounts for approximately 10% to 30% of all birth defects. Congenital heart disease occurs in approximately 9 out of every 1,000 live births. Although some of these abnormalities are not clinically significant and will resolve spontaneously, some of them can only be treated with surgery. Although it is suggested that heart diseases, genetic and environmental factors, for which diagnosis and early diagnosis are very important, the cause of most of them is still unknown.
